The pad shape matters, generally the higher the rise the better the brush works. The firmness is not as important as the bristles, they massage the scalp and not the pad.

How to brush, always bend  your head forward and brush from the nape through to the front hair line. this results in lifting the roots up, similar to an isotonic muscle contraction. allowing maximum blood flow to improve the quality of the hair growth. You only need 15 to 20 brush strokes nightly.
